Installing Digital Signage: What You Need to Know

Updated: Mar 5, 2019

As the digital signage client, you do not typically see the behind-the-scenes of your digital signage project installation. Perhaps an Instagram or Facebook worthy photo snapped by your integrator to highlight the progress being made. Social media win, but that isn’t what I am talking about.

digital signage installation

Behind the scenes of an installation there are many steps your integrator is taking to ensure your project is exactly what you wanted and to provide you with a successful installation.

It’s not just plug in and power on, as easy as it sounds.

So what must be considered? What should be avoided? What do I, as a customer, need to ensure happens during an installation?

Well we have answers to what you need to know.

The Integrators Role

A digital signage integrator can take you from conception to delivery, and not require you to do the hard work.

Without an integrator you are the one hiring and firing, buying and shipping, and calling and communicating with multiple key players in this process.

Once you decide to work with an integrator, they have your back and become the coal to the train engine.

It starts with knowing and keeping your end results in mind. The goal, the payoff, the return on your investment, starts with your integrator working with you from day one, knowing exactly what you want and making a plan to execute just that.

The integrator will help you strategize, assess, and make necessary changes to be sure to reach the audience as desired. The integrator is your subject matter expert. This is their job.

How do integrators assist the actual installation, like what is considered?

Installation Considerations

Once you have your initial consultation and the integrator completes a Needs Assessment (link to needs assessment blog), the goal of your digital signage project will be established. The integrator will then more than like schedule a Site Survey.

The Site Survey is exactly as it sounds. An assessment is made of the location for the project. Placement of screens, audience consideration, power and connectivity (we will come back to this), and possibly meeting with any key team members for direct clear communication throughout the project.

The site survey is done with the end in mind and allows the integrator to evaluate the true cost and timeline for the project.

Now, coming back to power and connectivity. Displays obviously need electrical power so installation may require additional electricity to be run to the area that the screens will go. This will need to be considered to ensure all screens and media players have power.

For connectivity, it is crucial to have a strong network connection. Firewalls, IT blocks, and security can pose a hold up or dilemma.

As an integrator, Coffman Media uses a cloud based software solution, Signagelive, and having no connectivity means an incomplete project. Knowing this ahead of time and working with your IT department can help avoid or repair this issue before it even becomes one.

When considering hardware, there are a few considerations. Mounts should be sturdy and allow you easy access to fixing displays when need be. Also, based upon where you are installing, mounts may require additional pieces for installation such as ceiling mounts for assured safety.

Selecting hardware that has been tested before it is installed will limit additional hours of labor by your installation technician. Choosing displays with warranties will ensure quick and painless swaps if needed, I mean this is technology we are talking about.

The most important role of the integrator during the installation process is developing the proper timeline for the project.

From running new electrical outlets, confirming connectivity, ordering and shipping hardware, hiring and scheduling the properly insured and trained technicians at the correct time, completing the installation of the software, and then training the person or persons who will be updating and developing the content for the screens is a fun puzzle to put together.

Choosing an integrator for your digital signage project that are subject matter experts and offer a white glove service to you as the client, such as Coffman Media, is going to be the significant difference between a successful and unsuccessful installation.

Allow your integrator to work their magic during the installation process and your digital signage dreams can become a reality.
